Cartagena: What To See In One Of The Most Iconic Cities Of Colombia

The popular Cartagena de Indias has its fame for several reasons, some of them include the beautiful architecture, the history and culture, and the beautiful beaches. In fact, Cartagena is on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Awesome, right?

This is what makes Cartagena one of the must-go cities in Colombia! Take a look below at the main things you have to see and do when going to this iconic city!

Ciudad Amurallada

Colourful buildings in Cartagena, Colombia

The historical center of Cartagena is known as Ciudad Amuralhada, which means “walled city”. Yes, Ciudad Amurallada is like a city within a city delimited by a wall! And it is a place full of colors, old and genuine architecture, and stone-paved streets. It is like walking into an old movie.

It is easy to get lost there, but don’t worry, this is part of the touristic adventure. Be prepared to walk a lot under the sunlight!

Besides walking and enjoying the beauty of the historical center of Cartagena, don’t forget to take cute pictures, shop for local craftwork, and go to amazing restaurants and bars!

Castillo de San Felipe

The San Felipe de Barajas Castle, most known as Castillo de San Felipe, is another landmark that makes Cartagena such an interesting city to know. The castle was built by the Spanish over 480 years ago.

The fortress has a unique design and architecture and it provides an extraordinary view of the city and the sea.

The entrance is going to cost you 25,000 COP and I recommend getting a guided tour to learn about Cartagena’s past.

Castillo de San Felipe is not only an aesthetically pleasing tourist activity but also a rich learning experience!

Playa Blanca

Last, but not least, you can’t miss going to one of Cartagena’s stunning beaches!

Playa Blanca is situated on an island very close to Cartagena called Isla Baru. It takes only 45 minutes or so to get there, and you can go by bus!

In Cartagena, actually, there are a lot of services that organize day tours to Playa Blanca for 25,000 to 45,000 COP with lunch included.

You’ll be amazed by how clear the water is and how golden the sand is… A true Caribbean sea experience!
