What to do in Banff: 4-Day Itinerary

Banff is honestly one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been. If you’re in Canada, or planning a visit, it’s absolutely worth the trip. Think turquoise lakes, mountain peaks, cozy alpine towns, and unreal views in every direction.

I went in July 2023 with my partner and 2 friends and wanted to share my exact 4-day itinerary in case you’re planning something similar!

Before You Go

To fully live the Canadian Rocky experience, I recommend renting an RV and getting a campsite in Banff. It’s such a fun and flexible way to explore the Rockies, and honestly, waking up in nature every morning is part of the magic.

For RV rentals, I recommend renting in advance through Cruise Canada. They have good RVs and service for pick-up in Calgary.

You will need to reserve your campsite a lot in advance, especially if you’re going in the summer because Banff is a very popular destination.

Campsite Options:

Here are three great campgrounds in or near Banff:

  • Tunnel Mountain – Villages 1 and 2 – Close to town with full RV hookups.
  • Two Jack Lakeside Campground – More rustic, peaceful vibes with lakefront views.
  • Lake Louise Campground – Great if you want to base yourself closer to Lake Louise.

Day 1: Arrival, RV Pickup + Exploring Banff

We started the adventure by picking up our RV from Cruise Canada in Calgary right after landing. Then, we drove straight to our first destination: Banff Gondola.

We got a ride to the top of Sulphur Mountain to see the panoramic views of the Bow Valley. Insane! And there’s a short boardwalk trail up there too.

You will notice that the next destination of day 1 is right around the corner. We didn’t even need to drive. We left the RV parked and walked to the Banff Upper Hot Springs.

It’s the perfect way to relax, especially with the mountains as your backdrop!

We were also lucky that, even though it was July, the temperature was a little cool (like 10 degrees Celsius). So, it was the perfect way to enjoy the evening.

After that, we finished our day strolling around downtown Banff. Because of the time, we didn’t get to see much, but we went to a bar to eat and have a drink. Finally, we drove to our campsite for our first night in Banff.

Day 2: Moraine Lake + Peyto Lake

We woke up early and were ready for a day of beautiful scenery. We went to the town to get the shuttle to Moraine Lake (since private vehicles aren’t allowed anymore).

Of course, we also took some time to see what we missed the night before: cute shops, restaurants, and mountain-town charm all around.

When it was time to get the shuttle, we drove to the departure spot.

When we got to Moraine Lake, we couldn’t believe the perfection of nature, looking at the unbelievably blue water and perfect mountain backdrops. Also, there are several trails to explore, depending on your energy level.

After that, we drove north along the Icefields Parkway to Peyto Lake.

I can’t forget to mention that the drive itself is a unique experience. The roads wind through towering peaks, turquoise rivers, dense pine forests, and valleys that stretch endlessly into the distance. Every curve reveals a new, postcard-worthy view!

Arriving at the parking lot for Peyto Lake, there is an easy and short hike to the viewpoint. The shape of the lake (it looks like a wolf!) makes it one of the most unique in the area.

To end the day, we just went to a restaurant in downtown Banff.

Day 3: Lake Louise Hike + Calgary City Vibes

On our last day in Banff, we decided to wake up super early (like 4 am) to drive to Lake Louise and beat the crowds. Since it is a super popular destination, the parking lot fills up quickly, especially in the Summer. The advantage of the RV is that it is also our hotel (lol), so we got there early and took a nap until 9 am. When we woke up, the parking lot was already packed!

After appreciating the view from the ground, we decided to go for the hike. This is what you can do:

  • Lake Agnes Tea House (7km round trip – classic!)
  • Or, for more of a workout, the Plain of Six Glaciers trail (which we did! 14 km round trip. 2,140 meters above sea level)

Whichever you choose, it’s pure mountain magic. But the view from the ultimate top is breathtaking, and the feeling of accomplishment is indescribable. However, be mindful that it will take a full day. Bring a snack and a lot of water!

When we were done, we started heading back to Calgary. It’s about a 2-hour drive. We parked the RV in a free designated RV parking lot around the city and spent the evening exploring downtown.

We actually used the scooters (which we don’t have in Toronto) to explore the area, and it was the ultimate fun of the night! Highly recommend!

Day 4: Breakfast + Home Time

Before wrapping up the trip, we had one last breakfast in Calgary. Here are a few great brunch spots to check out:

  • OEB Breakfast Co. – So many delicious and unique options.
  • Monki Bistro – Trendy spot with a local feel.
  • Red’s Diner – Classic diner with awesome eggs benny.

And just like that, it was time to return the RV and head back home—with our hearts full and phones overflowing with mountain pics.

Rocky Mountain Steep, to the west we go, Lake Louise…

I wrote this little poem after the trip, which was one for the books. The beauty in Banff is unbelievable. With scenery this stunning, filters are totally unnecessary.

If Banff is on your list, I hope this itinerary helps you plan your own unforgettable adventure.
